Nigeria Protests Plan To Eliminate Wrestling From Olympics
Nigeria Protests Plan To Eliminate Wrestling From Olympics
The Federal Government has joined the rest of the world to protest the recently announced recommendation by the Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) that wrestling be eliminated from the Olympic Games in 2020.
The position of the Federal Government was made known Thursday by the Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Dr. Patrick Ekeji, who spoke on behalf of the Minister of Sports, Bolaji Abdullahi, when the petition and protest letter by the Nigeria Wrestling Federation was submitted to Nigeria’s IOC representative Mr. Habu Gumel, for onward transmission to the general congress.
Ekeji expressed the FG’s dismay at the decision of the executive board of the IOC to eliminate wrestling from the Olympics, stressing that “wrestling is a foundation sport in the Olympics and for us in Africa it is a traditional sport”.
He further stated that he strongly believed that the general congress may upturn the unpopular decision noting that wrestling was one of the six Olympic sports celebrated at the first modern Olympic Games.
The Director General lamented that the reason advanced by the executive board to eliminate the well celebrated sport was not strong enough maintaining that the fact that they were no enough sponsorship for the sport was in his view “not a good enough reason to eliminate the sport from the Olympics”.
Earlier, President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF), Austin Edeze said that the elimination of the wrestling from Olympic sports 2020 would be a big challenge for the entire wrestling community worldwide and in Nigeria in particular where the federal government selected wrestling as one of the core sports and has put its full energy and resources to develop it.
“Removing wrestling as an Olympic sport shall have devastating effect and major discouragement for both the athletes and all lovers of the sport, especially in Nigeria where we have in excess of 5 million wrestlers,” he further added.
On his part, representative of the IOC, Alhaji Gumel pledged to present Nigeria’s petition to the IOC general session scheduled for September, in Buenos Aires Argentina.

Flying Eagles Qualify For U-20 World Cup
Defending champions Flying Eagles on
Saturday advanced to the semi-final of the Algeria 2013 African U-20
Championship after they defeated DR Congo 3-1 in their last Group B
match in Oran.
The
result means the Nigerian U-20 side, which placed second in Group B,
have qualified for the Turkey 2013 U-20 World Cup. The four
semi-finalists in the competition automatically qualify for the World
Cup.
Nigeria will play Group A winners Egypt in Tuesday’s semi-final while Ghana, who beat hosts Algeria 2-0 on Friday, will square up with Group B winners, Mali.
The Flying Eagles, who needed a draw to advance, dominated the highly-physical match and they deservedly got the opening goal in the 37th minute through captain Abduljeleel Ajagun’s well-taken penalty kick after a Nigerian was brought down in the DR Congo box.
It was Ajagun’s second goal of the tournament having scored the lone winner against Gabon, also through a penalty kick, on Wednesday.
A minute later, the impressive Aminu Umar, who replaced the suspended Olanrewaju Kayode, added the second, when he slotted home a loose ball inside the box.
The Wikki Tourists forward emerged Nigeria’s hero as he scored the third goal just after the break with an impressive lob over the DR Congo keeper.
DR Congo forward Pembele’s rasping drive inside the box in the 72nd minute made score 3-1 but it was too little too, as the Nigerians booked their ticket to the World Cup in Turkey.
Mali, who lost their last group game 2-0 to Gabon, ended with six points, same as Nigeria, but they topped the group courtesy of the head-to-head rule, having beaten Nigeria 1-0 in their group opener. Gabon had four points while DR Congo had one.

Prophetess Drags Pastor Husband To Court For Adultery
Titilayo Oluokun, a prophetess, has
pleaded with an Agege Grade ‘A’ Customary Court to dissolve her
22-year-old marriage. The 51-year-old woman, who lives at 8, Aina Aladi
Street, Agbado, Lagos, told the court that her husband, a pastor, is
randy.
”Four women had four children for my husband in the last three years. He also has numerous girlfriends. I know some of the girlfriends because they live on my street”, the applicant narrated. ”I was in church sometime in 2009 when a woman came with three children, claiming they belonged to my husband and that my husband neglected her.
”It was a thing of shame because,I am the founder of the church, and also a prophetess while my husband is one of the pastors. ”I gave the woman N20,000 and begged her. I told her not to come to the church to disturb me again. ”In the other customary court I took him to in 2011, he was asked to write an undertaking that he won’t impregnate any woman again.
”To my surprise, he impregnated two women after. That was when I knew I had to call it quits with him. ”I had him arrested sometime last year because he wanted to stab me and, from the police station, he was asked to move his things out of my house”.
Titilayo also told the court that her husband came to live in the house she built, adding that he didn’t provide for feeding, yet spent money on women. ”I loved him, cared for him and did not deprive him access to my body anytime he needed me, so I see no reason why he was cheating on me,”she said.
The wife wanted the marriage dissolved and the custody of the children. The husband, Adewale, didn’t appear in court for the third time since the proceedings started. Court president, Mr Emmanuel Shokunle, adjourned the case to April 3 for further hearing.

Sexual Slavery: "He Always Gave Me N100 After Having Sex With Me" - Girl, 13
In what can be described as the height
of wickedness or extreme case of sexual perversion, a man has subjected
a 13-year-old girl to a terrible show of his machismo by continuously
having sex with her for two weeks.
The girl, Faith (surname withheld) is in primary six in a public school at Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Government Area of Lagos State.
Sunday Sun investigations revealed that the amorous game must have been going on for long before the two weeks’ “sabbatical” when the immoral act became a daily routine.
It was gathered that the young girl had before now been playing truancy forcing the Head Mistress of her school to alert her parents and she was cautioned. Thereafter she attended school regularly for about two weeks before she again became truant.
Narrating her ordeal, Faith who looks younger than her age said the man she simply identified as Edwin lured her to his shop one day, enteraintained her with juice and thereafter he started caressing her. Later the did was done.
She added that she was scared and terrified but the man would not leave her and instead caressed her and later laid her on her back, removed her clothes and had sex with her.
After the sexual escapade, she said, the man gave her N100.
The man later cajoled her into coming to his shop during school hours as a result of which she was absent from school for complete two weeks.
She said, “He told me that if I tell anybody, I would die. Or he will send people to go and kill me when I am passing by. That was why I was afraid to tell anybody”.
According to her, the man used to have sex with her in his shop and after school hours he would release her to go home telling her to come back the following day. As usual, he always gave her a parting gift of N100.
“He always gave me N100 after having sex with me. He also used to buy food for me when I was with him”, she added.
It was gathered that once the man wanted to commence his diabolical act, he normally bribed a woman who sells orange beside his shop and the woman would leave.
The bubble however burst last week Friday after the school invited the girl’s parents to inquire about what was happening to their daughter as she had not been in school for two weeks running.
Sunday Sun learnt that her parents were surprised to hear the allegation and they told the Head Mistress (HM) that it could not have been true because she left home everyday in school uniform and other materials.
Since the day was Thursday, she told her parents the following day being Friday, that they should ensure that the moment she was through with her school preparation and about to leave home they should grab her and bundle her to her office to come and explain herself.
The game worked, as Faith was face-to-face with the school head the following day.
After interrogation in the presence of her parents, the fear of her HM overwhelmed her and she said it all.
She was said to have felt remorseful that she could not hold back anything from what transpired between her and Edwin.
Her father (name withheld) was also downcast on hearing the confession of her daughter.
Her father while speaking with Sunday Sun, was apparently perplexed and said he did not have any iota of suspicion that his daughter was not actually going to school during her truancy.
“Everyday she dresses and carries her school bag and leaves home. I never believed that she was going to somewhere else”, he said.
He lamented that the man wanted to ruin her life praying that he should leave his daughter alone.
When Sunday Sun met the man whose name is Edwin (surname withheld) in his shop on Thursday, he admitted knowing the girl but denied ever having sexual intercourse with her.
He also said the only time he gave the girl money was on Friday when he gave her N50.
“I swear God knows I don’t have anything with this girl. If I have anything with her, anything I am looking for in this world I should not get it”, the man who said he was 47 and married with four kids swore.
Edwin said he hails from Imo State and told Sunday Sun that the first time he saw the girl , she was wandering in uniform on his street and he inquired from her why she was not in school and she explained that she was in need of N1000 for school.
He said he later advised her to go.
But the girl countered saying after the first meeting on the street, the third day while she was going somewhere with a friend, three women and a man accosted her and took her to his shop and from that day they started having sexual intercourse.
“I swear this man had sex with me for two weeks”, she insisted.

Boko Haram In Lagos: We’ll Defend Yoruba Land
The
National coordinator of the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC), Otunba Gani
Adams, has warned members of Boko Harm group to steer clear of Yoruba
land in the interest of peace, unity and stability of the country.
Speaking in an interview with Sunday Sun after the Thursday’s arrest of some terror suspects believed to be members of Boko Haram insurgency in Lagos State, Adam said his group would defend Yoruba land against any aggression with their last drop of blood.
His words, “We never thought that Boko Haram would ever think of coming to Yoruba land. We condemned what happened on Thursday out rightly and we are sending a warning signal to them that any attempt to bomb or destroy any part of Yoruba land will be met with severe resistance. Any group of person who attempts to attack Yoruba land will meet their waterloo. As an organization, we are prepared to defend Yoruba land with everything we have, including the last drop of blood in our veins. We will defend Yoruba land both physically and spiritually.”
He further expressed the willingness of the OPC to cooperate with security operatives in their efforts to ensure peace and safety of persons in the Southwest and Nigeria as a whole.
“We are ready to co-operate with any security agent working to restore peace and tranquility in Yoruba land. Yoruba is not known for religious fanaticism. As a people, we believe that the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria allows for freedom of religion. Whether you are a Christian, Muslim or traditional worshiper, everybody should be free to practice what he or she believes in. We are sending a warning signal to the hierarchy of Boko Haram or Ansaru that they should not try what they are doing in the North in Yoruba land,” he added.
Adams said though none of the Southwest governors had approached him on the best possible strategy to adopt to safeguard the region, he assured that Yoruba would not be caught unaware in case of any eventuality.
“I can’t count the number of calls I have received from well meaning Yoruba leaders between the incident of Thursdays and today. In my own opinion, Yoruba are prepared for any eventuality. Some of our Obas have called me; some other important personalities have also called me. Yoruba will not be caught unaware. I don’t know about the people in authority especially the governors and members of the state Houses of Assembly because I have never heard from them. No governor in Yoruba land has called me for us to sit down and map out strategies. All the same, we will contribute our own quota to ensure that Yoruba land is safe. From all indications, we are prepared for any eventuality,” he maintained.
Similarly, Senate Minority Whip, Senator Ganiyu Olanrewaju Solomon, representing Lagos West Senatorial District, also commended the security operatives for their proactive measure which led to the unraveling of the terror suspects before they could carry out their planned bombing.
He said, “The security operatives need to be commended for the arrest of these terror suspects. It would have been terrible if they were able to carry out their planned bombing, but the security operatives were able to foil their planned attack.”
Urging the security agencies to be ahead of the terrorists, he added, “They (security operatives) need to ensure that they are several steps ahead of terror in Lagos. That this happened in Lagos calls for concern. There is a reason for everybody to be worried because Lagosians are not known for terrorism. Lagos is not known for terror of any kind. Lagos is a community where communal life is a way of life. People living together know one another.”
Solomon also advised residents of Lagos to be more vigilant and report any suspicious movement to the law enforcement agencies. “We need to pay more attention to our environment and live with a higher sense of vigilance. We should not take anything for granted. We need to be more vigilant and support efforts of security agencies”, he enjoined.
But a former Publicity Secretary of the Afenifere, Yinka Odumakin, cautioned against creating unnecessary panic in the polity, saying “we only need to be more vigilant and conscious of movement around our environment.”
Odumakin warned that Yoruba would not succumb to any intimidation under whatever guise. “It is clear that all is not well in the country. Yoruba have no issue with anybody. We suspect that fifth columnists who want to instigate fear in Yoruba land are the one behind this thing. But Yoruba will not be vulnerable to any attack where ever it is coming from.”

Nigeria Is The 2nd Fastest Growing Champagne Market In The World
Nigeria, one of the world’s poorest and saddest countries is the second fastest growing champagne market in the world.
According to a report by Euromonitor International, Nigeria spends an average of N41.41 billion on champagne yearly.
The report indicates that between 2006 and 2011, it achieved a compound annual growth of 22 percent.
Total champagne consumption reached 752,879 bottles (75cl) in 2011, higher than consumption in Russia and Mexico; therefore, placing Nigeria among the top 20 champagne markets in the world.
In 2010, Nigeria consumed about 593,000 bottles, the highest consumption in Africa. The closest to this figure was South Africa, another country that has been identified as an emerging market for luxury goods, in addition to Nigeria. South Africa’s champagne consumption was 384,000 bottles in 2010.
“Nigerian champagne consumption is quite big,’’ says Charles Armand de Belenet, global marketing and communications director, at Pernod’s GH Mumm and Perrier Jouet Champagne brands, saying “we are building our network here and it is one of the most attractive places for us at the moment.”
It took the European markets by surprise that Nigeria could rank that high in global champagne consumption. Looking at the list of the markets expected to post the strongest gains in total champagne volumes over 2011-2016, France tops the list followed by United Kingdom. Brazil and China are not missing out so are the United States and the upbeat Australian market.
Nigeria’s place in the global consumer market for champagne may have come to stay. The Rose varietals and vintage have been in demand in Nigeria, hence, analysts believe this will increasingly inform the industry direction in 2013.
A visit to the Tiamiyu Savage office of Ekulo Wine World shows that a bottle of Rose champagne is sold for N77, 000, while Demi-set brand is N55, 000 per bottle. Krug and Crystal brands fall among the most expensive, with a bottle going for N165, 000 and N275, 000, respectively.
It is not only European wine producers that are looking into the Nigerian market, distillers from South Africa are also catching in. Wines of South Africa (WOSA), an association of South Africa’s wine exporters, has also seen Nigeria as a promising market.
According to the Euromonitor International data, wine consumption in Nigeria grew from 18.8 million litres in 2006 to 44.3 million litres in 2011. This is expected to increase by 80.4 percent, that is, 79.9 million litres by 2016.
Considering the poverty level in this country and the fact that these wines are imported, this report saddens me beyond measure.

In his letter dated 21 March, 2013, titled, RE: POLICE INVESTIGATION REPORT ON A CASE OF CONSPIRACY, FORGERY AND PERVERSION OF THE COURSE OF JUSTICE BY MTN NIGERIA LTD, Oyinlola posited: “A company’s ‘directing mind and will’ are members of its Board of Directors, who exercise control and management over the organization, and on whom the law imposes strict duties in the exercise of those functions.
“That being the case, the acts of the ‘directing mind and will’ or the ‘alter ego’ of a company are to be directly attributed to the company”.
Oyinlola, himself a lawyer, stated further: “Conversely, if the police have recommended that MTN be prosecuted for a crime, my humble view is that to give effect to that recommendation, it is members of the Board of MTN that should face prosecution”.
Additionally, the former governor wants the suspended President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Isa Ayo Salami, prosecuted for alleged manipulation of call data records (including Salami’s) that MTN forwarded to the security agencies at the behest of the National Judicial Council’s Special Investigative Panel which heard Oyinlola’s petition in 2011 arising from his protest on his loss of the case on the Osun State guberatorial election.
The perjury case against Rotimi Odusola, Senior Manager, Commercial Legal with MTN, according to the ex-governor, is a separate and distinct matter altogether”, he concluded.
In a related development, he also forwarded a petition, titled: JUSTICE AYO SALAMI AND MTN: ADDITIONAL PROOF OF CONSPIRACY TO TAMPER WITH EVIDENCE, to the Chief Justice of Nigeria and Chairman, National Judicial Council, Aloma Mariam Mukhtar.
In the letter, which was acknowledged as received on 20 March, 2013 and to which he attached NJC’s letter of invitation to MTN, Oyinlola said, “Further to my letter of the 14th of February, I wish to avail Council, through your office, of additional proof of conspiracy to tamper with evidence, involving Justice Ayo Salami and MTN Nigeria Communications.
“Paragraph 2 of the attached National Judicial Council’s letter of invitation to MTN clearly states that the request to appear as witness before the Special Investigative Panel, which heard my petition, was at Justice Ayo Salami’s instance.
“Additionally, aside the fact that the Chairman of the National Judicial Council’s Special Investigative Panel, retired Justice Umar Abdullahi, announced during one of the Panel’s sittings that Justice Salami was inviting the telecoms service provider to appear as his witness (the record of proceedings should reveal this), MTN’s representative, one Rotimi Odusola, was led in evidence by one of the suspended PCA’s coterie of lawyers, Lateef Fagbemi.
“As a minister in the temple of justice myself, I would be elated, if the hunch I have, that Justice Ayo Salami and MTN constituted themselves into a cog in the wheel of justice, proves to be contrary”

I’ve Learnt From My Mistakes – Jackie Appiah
Background
I am Jackie Appiah, a Ghanaian but was born in Canada in the early 80s. We moved back to Ghana in 1993. I had a very happy childhood with lots of friends.
One of the biggest actresses in Ghana
I feel blessed and favoured. God has honoured me with this precious talent. He has made me known across the globe, and I have made people laugh and cry. I am happy to be in this profession and I am happy my people appreciate the work that I do, especially my fans.
Me and Nollywood
Nigeria is like my second home. I think the acceptance was buoyed by the fact that I won the best supporting actress at Africa Movie Academy Awards. I came back the following year, got an award as the best actress in leading role and each time I came around, producers contacted me to take up roles in their movies and that was it.
First Nigerian movie
The first Nollywood movie I took part in was Sleepwalker, it was a joint collaboration between Ghana and Nigeria. It featured Genevieve Nnaji, Ramsey Noah, and Mercy Johnson to mention but a few.
Nollywood and Ghollywood
They are both growing in the right direction but I have noticed that life in Nollywood is more upbeat. For instance, whenever I am in Lagos, everything is moving fast! Nigerians are hasty when doing things while Ghanaians are laid back and relaxed. So, when I am in Nigeria, I double my speed and when I get back to Ghana, I relax again.
Journey into acting
I started acting at the age of 12 in my local church group. However, I became a professional actress when I starred in the TV series, Things We Do for Love. I have since evolved from that and learned a lot from everything around me including mistakes. As we grow older, a lot of things change and we mature in experience. I am a changed person, older, stronger, and wiser. My rise has been due to plenty of hard work and commitment to what I do. I always have it at the back of my mind that everything is possible. Impossibility does not exist in my dictionary. Sometimes, the best things happen when you just go with your instincts. I wouldn’t forget my team and crew, fellow actors and actresses who all contributed to where I am today. Above all, talent is a gift from God, who shows me the way and leads me to the light.
Challenges
Being in the limelight was not something I was prepared for and it is not as easy as everyone thinks. I would say fame is the most difficult thing to control because your life is no longer private. The media is constantly on your trail and people think all sorts of things about you. These are things that are beyond your control, you can’t get a hang of them. Sometimes the tales are so terrible you just want to sit in your room and cry! Sometimes these stories get to you but over time I have learnt to ignore them.
Me and Michael Bobby Obodo
He is simply a colleague and there is no truth in the allegation that we are dating. It’s false! Because people see us together does not mean we are romantically inclined. It is just a figment of some people’s imagination. Some people are up to mischief. Controversies no longer get to me. I have outgrown many things.
Marriage
That is my private live. I don’t go personal when granting interviews but I am a mother.
Fashion
I just wear anything that looks good on me. I love to experiment and I like to wear designers.
Leisure
I relax at home by watching movies I have done in the past.

Bishop Oyedepo Unveils A New Airline
Bishop Oyedepo Unveils A New Airline
Nigeria’s richest pastor and self-styled bishop, David Oyedepo, has made a glistening addition to his business empire by floating an airline called Dominion Air.
Bishop Oyedepo, who a few years ago ignited debate on flamboyant Christianity by acquiring his fourth private jet, is the owner of Dominion Publishing House, Covenant University and an elite secondary school called Faith Academy.
Listed by Forbes as Nigeria’s wealthiest pastor with a net worth of $150 million, Bishop Oyedepo is a preacher and founder of Living Faith Church Worldwide, more popularly known as Winners’ Chapel. Besides his four private jets, Forbes also mentioned the preacher’s luxury homes in London and the United States.
Sources within the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), the agency charged with business registration in Nigeria, confirmed the registration of Dominion Air with Bishop Oyedepo as its chairman. Another source within a Lagos-based insurance firm known to handle most of Oyedepo’s businesses said the airline project had been in the works for six years and was only made a reality this year.
